PORTLAND, Ore. (April 7, 2012) – Despite a record-setting 35 points from the USA’s Shabazz Muhammad (Bishop Gorman H.S. / Las Vegas, Nev.), the World Select Team captured an 84-75 win over the USA Junior National Select Team in the Nike Hoop Summit on Saturday night at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore.

Down by as many as 18 points in the first half, the USA fought back to take a 75-74 lead with 3:20 remaining in the game before the International squad closed on a 10-0 run to capture its fourth win and largest margin of victory in the 15-game history of the event.

“Obviously, we were down 52-34 at halftime. We had forced nine turnovers, but we dug a hole of 10-0,” said USA head coach Kevin Boyle (Montverde Academy, Fla.). “We got it to 32-26, and I think they out-scored us 20 or 22-2 to end the half to go up 18. We weren’t rotating good on defense. We were kind of standing and watching a little bit on offense. I don’t know if we started the game a little tight from the atmosphere, a lot of guys playing international basketball for the first time, or if they just came out more aggressive. In the second half we forced 14 turnovers, were able to turn them over a lot, able to get back into the game. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the job done with the hole being so large.”

Muhammad, in addition to setting the event scoring mark, also tied the U.S. record for field goals made (12) and set a new high for field goals attempted (19), while Kyle Anderson (St. Anthony H.S. / North Bergen, N.J.) grabbed a U.S. record-tying 10 rebounds to go with 12 points and four assists.

“I wasn’t really aware of (the scoring record),” Muhammad said. “I just thought my shot was going in tonight. I thought we really played well in the second half with the rotations on defense. If we would have done that in the first half, we would have come closer to winning the game.”

A trio of double-digit scorers led the World Team. Canada’s Andrew Wiggins tallied 20 points, including six attempted 3-pointers, tying the International record. China center Wang Zhelin added 19 points, and Croatia’s Dario Saric scored 13 points to go with 14 rebounds, which tied the previous World Team high.

The USA was plagued by ice-cold 35.9 percent (28-78 FGs) shooting from the field and was out done of the glass by a 57-34 margin. In fact, the World Team’s 57 rebounds established a new game high for the international squad.

“Wow, special win for us, for the World Team,” said Roy Rana (Canada), head coach of the World Team. “I know it hasn’t happened too often, so anytime you get a win over the USA it’s a good feeling. I thought we got off to a tremendous start and then hung on for our lives.”

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 26, 2012) – The World Select Team today was announced for the 2012 Nike Hoop Summit, the premier annual basketball game featuring many of the world’s leading basketball players aged 19-years-old or younger, which will take place on Saturday, April 7 (7 p.m. PDT tipoff) at the Rose Garden, in Portland, Oregon.

The game, which sees America’s top senior high school players take on a World Select Team, has been staged on 14 previous occasions and has given an extraordinary number of talented youngsters the chance to showcase their abilities. As of 2011, an incredible 125 Hoop Summit alumni have been drafted into the NBA.

Seeking their first victory since 2009, when the World Team beat the USA 97-89 in front of a record crowd of 11,246 and a national television audience, the World Team has named a strong 11-man roster for the 2012 game, including two players returning from the 2011 squad.

Forwards Dario Saric (6’9″, KK Zagreb Croatia Osiguranje / Croatia) and Evan Fournier (6’6″, Union Poitiers Basket 86 / France) were members of the World Team beaten 90-78 at the Rose Garden nearly 12 months ago.

Along with the two returning players, the team has named two Canadian forwards based in the United States - Anthony Bennett (6’8″, Findlay College Prep, Nev.) and Andrew Wiggins (6’7″, Huntington Prep, W.Va.).

The team also features four guards from Europe - Aleksandar Cvetkovic (6’3″, BC Crvena Zvezda DIVA / Serbia), Leo Westermann (6’5″, ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne / France), Dmitry Kulagin(6’6″, BC Triumph Lyubertsy / Russia) and Michal Michalak (6’6″, LKS Lodz / Poland).

The global squad is rounded off with centers Marcos Delia (6’9″, Boca Juniors / Argentina), Wang Zhelin (7’0″, Fujian SBS Xunxin / China) and Patson Siame (6’10″/ Zambia).

Cvetkovic plays for the prestigious Crvena Zvezda team in the top division of Serbian basketball and was a key member of the Serbia under-19 national team that won silver at the 2011 World Championship in Latvia where he was voted best guard and also selected to the All-Tournament first team.

Westermann is one of two French players chosen to the 2012 Hoop Summit team and plays his club basketball for the storied Asvel-Villeurbanne team in his homeland. He stood out at the under-20 World Championship in 2011, where he helped France to a bronze medal, and comes to Portland fresh from winning the skills challenge at the French All-Star Game.

Russia’s Kulagin plays for the Triumph Lyubertsy team in Moscow. A player on both the Russian under-19 and under-20 teams last year, Kulagin helped his under-19 team reach the semi-finals of the World Championship where his form earned him a place on the All-Tournament first team.

The final guard on the 2012 roster is Michalak from Poland who plays for the LKS Lodz club in the top division of Polish basketball. Michalak starred at the 2011 under-19 World Championships in Latvia where he was the fifth highest scorer in the competition, averaging 17.4 points per game. Michalak was also a Polish League All-Star in 2011.

France’s Fournier plays for Union Poitiers in the French Pro A league and, after two seasons at the highest level of professional basketball in his country, was selected to the full national team in 2011. Fournier also enjoyed an outstanding under-20 European Championship where he led France to the bronze medal and was voted best guard and named to the All-Tournament first team by the influential Eurobasket.com.

Another returnee from the 2011 Hoop Summit team, Croatia’s Saric plays his club basketball with KK Zagreb Croatia Osiguranje and was voted Defensive Player of the Year in Croatia’s A1 league in 2011. After appearing in Portland last April, Saric enjoyed a strong under-19 World Championships for Croatia, finishing fourth overall in scoring (18.1 points per game) and third in rebounds (10.1 rebounds per game).

Also at the forward position, Bennett is a veteran of the Canada under-16 and under-17 national teams, having played for World Team head coach Ray Rana on the under-17 team that won bronze at the inaugural FIBA under-17 World Championship in Germany in 2010. He is currently playing high school basketball at Findlay College Prep in Nevada.

Wiggins also played for Coach Rana and Canada at the 2010 under-17 World Championship where he scored 20 points in 22 minutes in his country’s 103-83 defeat to the United States. Like Bennett, he is playing high school basketball in the USA, at Huntington Prep in West Virginia.

Moving to the center position, Argentina’s Delia is with the Boca Juniors team in LigaA, the top division of basketball in his homeland. Delia also appeared for his national team at the FIBA Americas under-18 Championship in San Antonio, Texas, in 2010 and helped his country reach the semi-finals of the under-19 World Championship in Latvia last year.

China’s Wang Zhelin, from the Fujian SBS Xunxin club, played for his national team at both under-19 and under-23 levels in 2011 and, in 2010, was voted best center and named to the All-Tournament first team as China won gold at the All-Asian under-18 Championship in Yemen.

The final spot on the 2012 World Team roster is taken by Zambia’s Patson Siame who first came to the attention of scouts when he made a strong impression at the 2011 Basketball Without Borders event in South Africa.

The World Team at Nike Hoop Summit 2012 will be led by second-year coach Roy Rana, who is a six-year veteran of Canadian national team basketball and was appointed head coach of Canada’s Junior National Team in 2012. Rana led Canada to bronze at the inaugural FIBA under-17 World Championship in Germany in 2010, the latest in a long list of international honors that also includes two bronze medals and one silver with Canada at the Nike Global Challenge from 2006-09. Rana will again be assisted by Serbia’s Marin Sedlacek, who is making his 12th Hoop Summit appearance.

With two older brothers who play college football, Nerlens Noel has narrowed his college choices to Georgetown, Kentucky and Syracuse. (Nike Basketball)

March 19, 2012

Known for his defensive presence on the court and a high-top fade hair style off the court, Nerlens Noel has experts predicting his draft status and professional endorsement deals before he even has chosen a college or university for next season.

One of three players on the USA Nike Hoop Summit Team who remain undecided about where they will attend college in 2012-13, the 6’11” forward/center made news this past weekend when he narrowed his list to Georgetown, Kentucky and Syracuse.

Before he arrives in Portland, Ore., to take on the World Select Team in the 15th Annual Nike Hoop Summit on April 7, USA Basketball talked with Noel in our Nike Hoop Summit Player Profile.

What do you expect in the 2011 Nike Hoop Summit?
I actually haven’t seen the game. I’m just going into it expecting a good game from the World Team.

What do you think of international rules?
I have played using international rules before. It’s tough to adjust to it, especially the goaltending rule where you can hit the ball off of the rim. That takes time to get used to, but it’s not a bad rule to play by.

What factors will help you decide what college or university you’d like to attend?
I want to play for a coaching staff that I can trust and that I know will be able to develop me and prepare me for the next level.

Do you have a favorite training routine or drill?
No, I really don’t have a favorite.

What is your least favorite training routine or drill?
My least favorite is probably running suicides (lines).

Where is the most room for improvement in your game?
Basically, I need to shoot the ball at a more consistent rate and get stronger.

Who do you most like to be compared to?
I like the comparison to Bill Russell. He was a great legend of the game. And he won multiple championships in Boston, and that’s where I’m from. So, that comparison means a lot to me.

What helps you stay motivated?
What helps me stay motivated is to reach for my dream and to be successful when I get there – just knowing that I haven’t made it yet. Especially for my family, my mom, everything she has done for me, her struggle. That’s just all of my motivation.

How did you finish your high school season?
We finished last week, and we lost in the playoffs. Obviously, I wasn’t happy ending the season with a loss. It feels good to close that chapter in my life and to prepare for the next steps. I’m only focusing on school and my recruiting. My decision is the only thing I have left to look forward to until graduation. That’s kind of a relief.

You have to brothers playing college football. Was football ever in your future?
Yeah, it was. I grew up playing football. I played quarterback, running back, safety, corner back; I loved playing football. But I had a little more luck in basketball, and I ended up just having a few growth spurts and I didn’t think football was the sport for me. I played football my whole life up to my sophomore year. My sophomore year was my last season. I definitely miss it, and sometimes when I’m back home I play street football with some of my friends like we did in the old days when we were younger.

We are going to try and develop our chemistry and our rotation quickly and get our guys to understand their roles. It’s not an all-star game, and we will be playing to win.

Montverde Academy (Fla.) head coach Kevin Boyle will led the USA Junior National Select Team against the World Team in the 2012 Nike Hoop Summit, with DeMatha Catholic (Md.) head mentor Mike Jones serving as an assistant coach on the U.S. sideline.

The Nike Hoop Summit, the country’s premier annual basketball game for high-school age boys, features America’s top high school seniors playing against a World Select Team comprised of top international players 19-years-old or younger.

Nationally televised by Fox Sports Net and its regional affiliates, the 2012 Nike Hoop Summit will take place at 7 p.m. (PDT) on Saturday, April 7, 2012, at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore.

“It’s a great honor to be a part of USA Basketball,” Boyle said. “I have worked with Nike through sponsorship of my teams since 1988, and Nike and USA Basketball are first class organizations. The USA Basketball men’s program has done a tremendous job with success at all age levels, and I look forward to coaching this team.”

“I am extremely excited.” Jones said. “All of my experiences with USA Basketball in my career before now have been absolutely wonderful, and I’m looking forward to having another opportunity to represent my country in international competition.”

Portland area fans may remember USA assistant coach Jones from the 2010 Les Schwab Invitational when he lead DeMatha past Kyle Wiltjer’s Jesuit High School (Ore.) in the semifinals and on to the tournament title.

“I’ve known Coach Boyle for quite a few years, and I have always respected him and the way he has run his program,” Jones continued. “I’m definitely looking forward to implementing his plan and his system with our guys as we try to do the best job we can to prepare our team and to maintain the current win streak the USA is on. We want to make sure we represent our country the best we possibly can. I’m very much looking forward to it, and I’m extremely excited.”

Tickets for the 15th Annual Nike Hoop Summit are now on sale, with general admission $5 when purchased in advance and $10 on game day. Reserved courtside seating is $25 and $50, and tickets can be purchased through the Rose Quarter Ticket Office, by calling 877-789-ROSE (7673) or by visiting rosequarter.com or nikehoopsummit.com.

“Each and every year the Nike Hoop Summit is a very competitive contest between the U.S. and the World Team, and it’s always a challenge to build team chemistry in the three days we have to prepare,” said Sean Ford, USA Basketball Men’s National Team Director and non-voting chair of the USA Men’s Developmental National Team Committee. “The committee feels confident, however, that Kevin Boyle and Mike Jones have what it takes to get the 2012 U.S. team to play together and with discipline. Their tremendous amount of experience and success demonstrate what great coaches they are, and USA Basketball is fortunate to have their leadership.”

The 2012 USA Basketball Junior National Select Team roster will be selected by the USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team Committee and is expected to be announced in the next few weeks. The 2012 World Select Team is expected to be announced in March. The USA Junior National Select Team will feature 10 players, while the World Select Team is expected to consist of 11 players age 19-years-old or younger from FIBA’s five geographic zones: FIBA Africa, FIBA Americas, FIBA Asia, FIBA Europe and FIBA Oceania, with the approved sanctioning of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the world governing body of international basketball.
